BAPE and hip-hop go hand-in-hand. One of BAPE’s earliest customers was Teriyaki Boyz, a legendary Japanese rap crew made up of rappers Biggie, Lil Wayne, and Wise.

Between Kanye West and Pharrell’s lookbooks, Kid Cudi’s relationships with the Japanese label stand out.

Kid Cudi worked at the BAPE SoHo, New York store before starting his rap career. He was also an avid fan and famously applied for the store 4 times before securing the job. While still an employee at BAPE, Kid Cudi recorded his first mixtape. His former employer collaborated with Kid Cudi on a line of T-Shirts celebrating him. Bapesta sneakers and shark hoodies adorned each shirt featuring a different animated Kid Cudi. Collectors still prize the shirts today as one of hip-hop’s most fashionable stars.

BAPE and Kid Cudi have reunited several times since their release, most recently at ComplexCon in 2016. Convention attendees sold the reunion for thousands today. There is rumor of another collaboration later this year, making this one of BAPE’s most coveted partnerships.

(2009 To The Present) Modernica X BAPE

As far as unexpected collaborations go, this is the one to beat. Modernica produced fiberglass chairs featuring BAPE’s iconic camo in 2009.

It is based on Charles and Ray Eames’ original 1948 design for Herman Miller. The clear design combined with the infamous pattern intrigued me. Combining classic with contemporary was always an NIGO hallmark.

Both brands have collaborated on several products since 2009, including a fold-out metal side table and a wooden coffee table that utilize classic Mid-Century and Contemporary designs. The Case Study Side Shell has been updated with steel hairpin legs. The 2019 “LA CAMO” chair’s camo pattern was set between two layers of fiberglass rather than printed on the exterior, meaning it will never fade.

Only available at LA BAPE’s flagship and Modernica showroom, the chair sold out immediately for LA BAPE’s 1-year anniversary. For a $710 device, that’s impressive. Chairs can be easily flipped for twice the cost if you get lucky.

Bapé X Star Wars

In 2011, BAPE announced its collaboration with the Star Wars franchise. A landmark collaboration between streetwear and film, the 2011 capsule collection was still notable-Episode III was released in 2005, and Episode VII wasn’t announced until many years later.

Star Wars films and memorabilia were among NIGO’s pop-culture obsessions at the time (although his role shrank with Human Made). Licenses were obtained from the LucasFilm estate. The T-shirts featured Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, and R2-D2.

Over the years, BAPE has reissued the graphics to celebrate film releases, anniversaries, and figurine releases. Star Wars collaborations are sure to come as new films are in development, a Disney+ show premieres, and various anniversaries approach.

Bape X Supreme (2002)

2002 was a big year for Supreme and BAPE. Although Supreme was a skate shop (at the time) and BAPE was a fashion-lifestyle brand, many similarities between the two created crossover appeal.

It was almost impossible to buy BAPE outside of Tokyo, even as the Urahara scene was expanding. In the same way as Supreme, BAPE was an insider’s brand. Similarities made a collaboration inevitable.

2002, Supreme produced 15 unique camouflage patterns with BAPE. BAPE’s famous box logo T-shirts featured the custom BAPE-head camo, along with a BAPE sleeve tag, which has remained standard issue to this day. The colors were designed for BAPE and Supreme stores throughout Japan (there were three at the time) and the New York Supreme flagship; a secondhand price is a good indication of rarity. This collaboration proves BAPE’s OG streetwear credentials, despite two wildly different brands.

The Ugmonk brand is another great example. Though each is unique, they all share simple, minimalist, and sharp design ideas. Despite making unique designs, they are distinctly their own.

Get To Know Them 

The first step is to identify the audience for which you are designing. Why? What is it? What is it? What is it? You should be passionate about it. Determine who you are designing for next.

Marketing a clothing brand is all about knowing who will buy it. How many clothing line owners don’t know who they are selling to? Whenever you need help with your product or design, ask yourself “Who is my target market?” The target market for fishing clothing may prefer a different fit or feel than people into high fashion.

Wear The Right Shirt

People won’t wear your shirt if they don’t enjoy it. Pick something that delights both visually and physically.

The More Research You Do, The Better 

It’s all about research! Know your product before you sell it. If you don’t look into other creative options on the t-shirt printing side, you may short-change yourself by choosing one style.

Check out the different screen sizes, print options, ink types (water-based and plastisol), shirts available, fabrics, and add-on services such as custom tags and hem tags. It’s all about the design, the feel, and how it’s delivered.

It’s important to partner with the right printer. It’s not all printers.

It’s your brand, your business. Your printer should come along on this journey with you. Unless they are committed to excellence, it’s your reputation at risk. Select a printer with whom you can build a great relationship, who will provide you with resources and who will help you celebrate!

Designing retail-quality shirts (with retail bells and whistles) can be expensive, but there are clever ways to keep costs down. Find out which t-shirts are most cost-effective based on the initial investment you want to make. The most expensive blank garment might not be the best option if you are on a budget.

Start at the bottom. You can do it! But don’t go with a shirt that isn’t soft or comfortable just because it’s cheaper. Because people won’t wear it, it’s not our problem. How can you grow your brand if no one wears it? Research (and choosing the right printer) are critical to the initial success of your brand.

When you start your clothing line, you should realize that most businesses won’t let their founders draw a salary for the first year. Consider living costs, including medical bills, insurance, and so on, and make sure you can afford them. Running your business on credit is also an option, but be aware that getting a business loan for a new business is really challenging. In addition, you have less pressure if you run your Bape clothing start-up as a side project. Having less time to devote to your business requires discipline on your part.
