You most probably would have seen fire doors in loftier buildings. Fire door are emergency exits in the case of a fire or any other accident that can happen in the building. You might have noticed that fire escape doors are usually separate from the building and are connected through a staircase.
1. How do fire escape doors work?
Usually, the question which arises in the mind of people is that how does a fire escape door still function when there is a fire in a building and why does the door not catch fire? The answer behind this is simply that these doors are made up of steel and aluminum and are given a fire-resistance coating. They are kept closed at all times so that the fire does not reach the emergency escape exit. Plus, any gaps between the door and the wall are filled with fire-resistant sealants, so that there is completely no way for the fire to go into the emergency escape exit.
2. Are fire doors really a legal requirement?
Fire doors are a legal requirement in flats, apartments, and buildings which share a common area with other tenants. After constructing a building, you need to get approval from that respective area. So, if you have not built a fire escape door in your area then there are chances that your building won’t get approved until or unless you get a fire escape door built.

4. Do fire doors need a self-closing device?
It is not really necessary that you attach a self-closing device to the fire door as in case of any incident you can close the door by yourself. However, attaching a self-closing device is just an additional precaution that you can take, and in some countries attaching a self-closing device is a legal requirement. This is because in case of an accident if the fire door remains open then obviously the fire will spread faster. But if there is a self-closing device attached to the door then the door will close faster and the chances of fire-spreading faster are reduced. A fire escape door can withstand fire for at least 30 minutes before the fire starts to penetrate through the doors.
5. How effective is a fire escape door?
A fire escape door is only effective when it is properly installed and closed. It is the duty of fire door installers to check if the doors are installed, whether they open or closes properly, or there are any common faults in them which require a sealant. Even if there is the slightest problem with the door like it is not closing properly or has some common faults through which the fire can escape then they need to be immediately fixed.
