What is the Sun?

The planets of the solar system

These planets, together with the Earth, revolve around the closest star to us – the Sun. Scientists called this space family the solar system. There are eight planets in the solar system. If you arrange them from the closest to the Sun to the most distant, then Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. are next to the Sun, and all the time revolve around it along their path, as if they are leading a round dance. 

The path that is followed is known as an orbit. Every globe has its very own orbit. For instance, the Earth does a complete turn around the Sun within 365 days, or that is that it is a year long. 

Do you know that each planet not only revolves around the Sun but also revolves around its axis like a whirligig? We refer to one turn around its axis as a “day”. On Earth, a day lasts 24 hours, and on other planets, a day passes either faster, or much longer. 

• Nimble mercury

The smallest and the nearest close to the Sun is Mercury. Mercury completes a full circle around the Sun faster than everyone else however it is able to move along its axis at a much slower pace. Because of this, it is always hot on one side, because the sun is very hot. On the other side, on the contrary, it is very cold, because the sun’s rays hardly reach there. This is how amazing small and nimble Mercury is.

• Dangerous Venus

Venus comes second from the sun. It’s quite similar in size to the size of our Earth but humans cannot reside there. There are many poisonous gases in the air of Venus, which are impossible to breathe. And the surface of the planet is very hot, so there is always a strong heat. Astronauts cannot go to explore Venus, because the heat will immediately melt the rocket. This is the hottest planet in the solar system!

The Martian year is much longer than the Earth one. Scientists have invented a special device that is Mars rovers that can walk on Mars’s surface and examine the red planet. However, until now, they have not been able to find signs of life on Mars. 

• Giant Jupiter

And we fly away further and further from the Sun and approach the fifth planet, which is called Jupiter. If we weigh all the planets together, then Jupiter will be much heavier, that’s how huge it is! But an amazing fact: the giant does not have a solid surface on which to walk, because Jupiter is a huge ball of gas. And on this planet, strong winds constantly blow, which turn into storms, hurricanes, and storms. These vortices can be clear in the images of the planet that were created by instruments in space.

Earth has only one moon whereas Jupiter has 80. Large and small, covered with ice, mountains, and volcanoes, they all revolve around the gas giant.

• Mysterious Saturn

We greet you on the sixth planet from the Sun called Saturn. Just like Jupiter, Saturn is made of gas, but it is much smaller in size than its neighbor. But Saturn has giant rings, by which it is easy to distinguish it from other planets. These rings are so huge that they can be seen even through a telescope. 

Scientists have been studying Saturn for many years, but until now they have not been able to understand how the mysterious rings appeared around this planet. One thing is known: they all consist of particles of ice, dust, and stones.

• The Cold Uranus

Uranus is the seventh planet. Uranus is known as the coldest planet. There are rings around Uranus, but they are smaller than those of Saturn. If you look at Uranus from space, it will be colored in an unusual blue-green color. This is because there is a lot of methane gas on this planet, which gives the planet an incredibly beautiful hue. 

• Distant Neptune

We arrived at the last eighth planet called Neptune. It is so far from the Sun that the fiery rays of the sun hardly reach it. Like the closest three neighbors, Neptune is a gas planet, on which it is impossible to land a rocket and build a house. 

In addition, the strongest winds in the solar system blow on the eighth planet, and one year lasts a very long time – as much as 165 Earth years.
