Every nation design its education system better suited to its vision and ideology. It is a public schooling system that is practiced from kindergarten to high school programs. United States of America has its own educational system designed according to the economic needs of that time. It was the era of industrial revolution. This system is failing now in the world of global economic climate because of many reasons which are mentioned below, in length.

8 Reasons Why US Education System Is Failing

TECHNOLOGICAL LAG:

There is an ongoing debate that to what extent education system should be in compliance with technology. Critics disregard the idea and call the introduction of technology in classroom would be a mere distraction. It can also impact learning in a negative way as access to technology would ease the ways of cheating.

However supporters argue that it would result in active engagements on part of the students as they have grown up in an environment where they are quite familiar with it as compared to the previous generation. So they expect their schools to be technologically oriented.

CODE OF CONDUCT:

Education is the state level subject at large and not as such controlled by the federal government as per the constitution of USA. Fifty states generate the revenue from sales and income taxes to fund education system. However the allocated funds have not been raised since the time of great depression, in some states of USA. Funds deficit results in minimum recruitment of teachers and less introduction of resources. 

LACK OF TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMMES:

Just considering a generation back, it was the time when teachers had to deal with students who used to come with mere primary socialization done by their families. They were like clean slates where teachers used to put data through enculturation.

 Comparing this situation to the present one, students nowadays are potentially sophisticated ones. These students have already built their perspective of the world before their entry into the schools. Now if teachers treat them the same way, they used to do with the previous generation, would result in failing education system as they need fostering of their ideas by the teachers which they are lacking in. Education of teachers is also not modified according to the demands of K-12 classrooms.

GENDERED EDUCATION:

Many fields of science, Math, Engineering and technology are thought to be male gendered. This resulted in gender gap in education system of USA. The young girls are still thought to be lacking the potential to adopt these fields. So these are still male dominated fields. This approach is not based upon practicality. It is based upon the long standing conventions that women need to prove themselves in all the spheres of life before they are given any opportunity. TEACH-TO-THE TEST APPROACH:

In 2009 the common core curriculum was introduced by the federal government. It was to ensure the single national curriculum. This was aimed to create equity across the country as students were required to pass through the same standardize testing before graduating high school. Critics viewed it as intrusion of federal government in state subjects, as education is controlled by states. While others criticize it as it will curb the innovative and creative gut of the teacher.

Moreover there was a great focus on standardize testing. It judge the students and teacher on the basis of their test scores. Now the question arises here is it an accurate measure of competency? Many put forth that it is another biggest reason for the failing education system of USA.

NEGLIGENCE OF PARENTS:

Most of the strength of public schools are comprised of students belonging to low-income background. Their parents are also not well educated mostly. So they have to face challenges as home is where the child spent rest of the time. It impact the personal and educational development of a student.

Nonetheless this is not limited to mere low income families. Even in cases where parents are educated and belong to the middle and upper strata of the society, they are so busy in their career oriented life that they don’t want to invest their previous time in their child.

ACHIEVEMENT GAP IN US DEMOGRAPHICS:

The US department of education releases the data to assess educational progress at national level, regarding the performance of the students. The compiled data shows the difference that has ever been there in the history of USA, based on racial and socioeconomic demographics. This achievement gap shows that high school dropout rate is never likely to come down to the level of zero. This gives birth to another issue. Is segregation still plaguing the nation in its core? Currently in the US, as in many other countries in the world, there are serious gaps in opportunities to learn, school completion rates, and academic achievement for different segments of the population. To sum up all the major reasons for failing education system in USA is near to impossible in few lines. However some of the important reasons are discussed here which stand in the way of it becoming globally competitive.
