Myths about international schools in India

Parents always want the best for their children be it education or lifestyle. They want the children to follow their choice and passion and parents put in their best efforts to give them the best of education. This brings in a lot of confusion for the parents. This makes it difficult for them to choose between different schools and curriculum’s. Adding to that it also worries them about the value and accreditation of these in schools in colleges and universities.

India has had government and private schools, in addition to those are the latest development of international schools. But many parents have weird myths about these international schools. Let’s bust a few of these myths that students or parents have about international school.

  1. All international schools across the country offer same curriculum.

Unless the parents actually do their homework browsing well about the school, they tend to think that all the schools offer same curriculum. But that’s not true. The two curriculum’s that are most offered in international schools are IB and IGCSE. IB is basically International Baccalaureate and IGCSE is International General Certificate of Secondary Examinations. The latter one is basically for grades 9 and 10 where the assessment is done by Cambridge International Examinations body.

There are limited number of schools that follow the parent countries curriculum directly. This could include American boards of the US, English National Curriculum of the UK. These are usually handled by their embassies or consulates.

  1. These schools are only for NRI’s and foreigners.

This is the misconception most of the parents have. But as other parents are starting to take admission for their kids in the best international school in Andhra Pradesh, the myth is slowly busting. These schools aren’t meant for foreigners or NRI’s only. In fact it is an easier approach for students who want to go out for higher studies and want to continue follow the same curriculum.

  1. Projects are the only source of education for the children.

The international school students do have textbooks based on IB or IGCSE curriculum, but their more focus is surely on projects, exhibitions, activities. These schools believe that more than textbooks, practical knowledge will let them be more creative and develop more interest.

  1. Cannot compete in competitive exams

Reality in terms of this myth is actually the complete opposite. Competitive exams are not really theory. They need more of practical knowledge. Hence, it is easier for the Cambridge or the IB students to crack. Just cracking these exams will not guarantee students a successful career. In fact knowing what career to choose and follow is the real success that the students can achieve.

  1. Academics of Indian boards are tougher than international schools

Again a big myth that most parents have. They both have equal level of difficulty and in depth topic knowledge, but it’s just that the approach to learning is quite different for them. CBSE might teach more of theory with minimum practical whereas IB and IGCSE focus more on practical knowledge as that helps students develop more interest in the subject and gets them more knowledge with their own doing.

  1. Students from these schools aren’t accepted in Indian universities.

This myth needs to bust. Over 43% of students from these international schools easily get admission in Indian universities. Just like how a student in India curriculum gets an admission in an international university or college. The same way it happens for students studying in international schools.

These are the few most common myths that the parents and the students have for international schools. Obviously there could be more, but these are most common and the reasons that most parents don’t enroll their students in these international schools. The basic reason could be that since these schools are new to the country, for these schools to be known well is a task. These schools need more marketing and have to clear these myths for more parents to enroll their children.

International schools could be the future of India.
