Student, Parent, Instructor – The Three Pillars of Kumon
Growing up, we all needed our parents for every small and big decision of our lives. Their contribution to our lives is immense and life-long. And if you know that, you understand that when the time comes, you must be prepared to be a life-long mentor to your child. Because as most child care experts would say, parents have the most crucial role to play in their child’s overall growth and success. And that is what Kumon’s Triangle is all about.
To take you further into the deep, Kumon is an After School Learning Programme franchise that started in Japan. Over the decades, the franchise has expanded globally, helping children from the farthest corners of the world take control of their learning. The learning programmes, which mainly focus on Math & English, are designed to help students: those struggling with the subject and those who want to advance beyond their academic grades. With a firm belief in the fact that every child is unique and has unique learning ability, Kumon learning programmes enable students to identify their strengths & weaknesses, start easy and build their self-confidence, master concepts one after the another and eventually learn beyond their school levels.
The franchise has Kumon learning centres spread across the world. Students can visit the facility to enroll and benefit from the learning programmes.
Talking about the Learning Triangle, Kumon believes Student, Instructor, and the Parent – all three parties are involved in Kumon’s learning process, with each one of them having specific responsibilities. Let’s take a look at the roles each of these parties need to play in the triangle. Keeping Children Safe in Education In 2021
Role of Students
- The role of students is quite simple. They must remain dedicated to their ultimate goal of becoming self-learners and take control of their learning
- They must put in the required efforts and time towards their learning, solving the worksheets in due time and master the concepts taught
- They must solve the problems on their own without taking help from anyone, be it friends, parents or grandparents
- They must never give up. If they get stuck with a certain problem, they must revisit their learnings or concepts from the past and find a way to solve the problem
- They must always remain motivated and challenge themselves to solve more problems, day after another.
Role of Kumon Instructor in the Triangle
- The role of Kumon instructors is undeniably crucial to achieving Kumon’s goals concerning each child. They are responsible for providing ‘just right’ guidance to the child throughout their journey, set work at the right volume and level of study to help them pursue their potential.
- At the learning centre, the instructor is responsible to observe the child while he/she is working, pay attention to every little detail about the child’s development, and track growth.
- The instructor is also responsible to give feedback and guidance to the child based on his/ her observation. The feedback would help the child with his/her academic and self-learning skills.
- The instructor, through his feedback, is also responsible to set different goals for the child, be it short-term goals or long-term ones. They must do so after consulting the child and creating study projections to help the child achieve those goals.
Role of Parents in the Triangle
- Talking about the responsibilities of parents, they must constantly encourage the child to stay committed to his/ her goals and track their progress.
- They must remain positive and remind the child that they are there to support him/ her, whenever required
- Parents must also focus on creating a quiet, distraction-free environment for the child to study. The right environment is quite essential for the child to be able to focus their complete attention on the worksheets and complete their worksheets more efficiently and effectively
- Additionally, parents must align themselves with Kumon’s goal of making the child a self-learner and encourage the development of a daily study habit;
- They can also track their child’s progress by marking their worksheets every day, right after it is completed and allow the child with time to review, understand the mistakes, and correct them
- Praise their children for their efforts and congratulate them on their every small and big achievements
- Most importantly, they must maintain an ongoing dialogue with the Instructor, update them of anything and everything that is and might impact their child’s studies.
Summing up, the common goal of both the instructors and the parents is to see the child succeed in his life. And this 3-way partnership is very crucial to ensure that, through all stages of the child’s Kumon journey.
