Did you know that some online clothing stores have a 50% return rate? Unfortunately, a lot of these returns are caused by getting the wrong size! But luckily by knowing simple measuring clothing tips, you can avoid this annoying mishap.
So if you’re tired of taking trips to the post office to return your online orders, keep reading this article to learn about apparel shopping.
Online Clothes Shopping for Men
Men’s clothing has its own style of measuring. So if you want to be a smart shopper, pay attention to these measurements:
- Neck measurements
- Chest measurements
- Waist measurements
- Shoulder measurements
- Arm’s reach
Let us start by learning how to measure a chest. First, you will need a measuring tape. Place the measuring tape under your armpits. Then wrap it around the broadest part of your shoulder blades and chest. Ensure that your chest is relaxed so you can get the most accurate measurement.
Next, you’ll want to measure your neck. To do this take the measuring tape and place it at the base of your neck. In other words, where the neck connects to the shoulders, right below Adam’s apple.
Again, you’ll need to be fully relaxed and looking straight ahead in order to get an accurate measurement. And ensure that the tape isn’t too tight around the neck area to avoid tight-fitting necklines.
If you have wider biceps, then you’ll also want to measure this part to avoid tight-fitting arm sleeves. So start by taking a buttoned shirt and laying it flat on a hard surface.
Make sure you spread the sleeves out smoothly to get an accurate measurement. To measure, start at the base of the sleeve and measure to the top where you can see the folded edge of the sleeve. While measuring, ensure you are keeping the tape perpendicular to the bottom and top sleeve edge.
Lower Extremities
Most mens wholesale clothing vendors sell their trousers and other clothing by whole and half numbers. So you’ll need to properly measure your lower extremities to get a proper fit.
So start by measuring your waist and taking the measuring tape and placing it around your waist. If you’re not sure where your natural waistline is, bend towards the left or right, and then find the crease on the opposite side.
If you want a standard fit, you can put one finger in between the tape. If you want a loose fit, put 2 fingers in between the tape. After this, measure your hips and inseam by wrapping the measuring tape on the widest part of your hips and buttocks.
And then for the inseam, place the measuring tape down on your groin towards the lowest part of your ankle. Next measure your shoulders by placing your tape on one end, at the very top of the horizontal line of your shoulder, and meet it with the vertical part of the arm.
Lastly, measure sleeve length by placing your tape on the middle of your neck and moving it below your shoulder. The tape should meet your inner palm.
Measuring Clothing for Women
The fashion industry for women has a lot more options. However, it can be harder for women to find the correct sizing. A lot of curvier women tend to have a hard time finding clothing that hugs their bodies correctly. And petite women have a hard time finding pants that do not gap.
Overall, it can be a win/lose situation when it comes to the online apparel industry. But luckily these simple measuring tips will avoid further complications!
So to start, when apparel shopping for women, these are 4 parts that need to be measured:
- Bust
- Inseam for pants
- Hips
- Waist
Once you’ve got these 4 parts measured, you’ll have a better fit with clothing items such as dresses, pants, shirts, and skirts.
So let’s start measuring the bust by taking the tape and placing it on the broadest section of your bust. Then wrap the measuring tape around your body. Make sure the tape is under your armpits to get an accurate measurement.
Next measure your waist by wrapping the tape over your waistline. You can use the same method of bending over to one side if you do not know where your waistline is!
Lower Extremities
To measure your hips, stand as straight as possible and measure over the entire part of your hips and also the buttocks area. Ensure you wrap the tape and there are no overlaps!
Lastly, measure your inseam by measuring the distance from the crotch to the hem of your favorite pants. If you don’t have a pair of pants that fit you correctly, you’ll need to measure the inseam on your body. Start by taking
measuring the distance between the top of your inner thigh, going down the bottom of your ankle. This measurement should give you an accurate inseam number so that your pants can fit properly.
Lastly, for girls and boys under the age of 12, we recommend adding 2 inches to the final number. This way any growth spurts are accounted for!
