Various processes to get Rid of Ink stains

Not only ink but fabrics also matter as different fabrics absorb inks differently. Cotton absorbs the ink most rather than polyester or any other man-made material.

Every ink component is different. It depends on the molecule, solvents, binding agents which depend on the ink’s self-life, color variants, and many more. 

Ink is a solution, gel, or sol that contains at least one or more colorant such as pigment or dye. This has various uses to create an image, text, or design to color any surface. To draw or to write anything with the help of a pen, brush, quill, reed pen, etc. If the ink is in thicker consistency then it can be used with letterpress or lithographic printing.

Ink is composing of solvents, pigments, dyes, resins,  lubricants,  solubilizers,  surfactants,  particulate matter,  fluorescents, and many other materials. Inks thickness, flow or dry appearance depends on their components such as colorants and other additives.

Ink basically made with two components-

1. Colorants
2. Vehicles

Ink has four classes:

1. Aqueous
2. Liquid
3. Paste
4. Powder 

In precise, there are basically two types of ink: oil-based and water-based. Water-based inks are easy to remove as compared to oil-based inks.

Water-based inks example- fountain pens, gel pens, rollerball pens.

Oil-based inks for example ball-point pens are difficult to remove.

Get rid of ballpoint ink stains:

Ballpoint inks are oil-based, so washing only with water will not get any solution. Instead of that find below some of the quick and easy solution:

• Alcohol rubbing: Soak a clean cloth or paper in rubbing alcohol and after a few minutes simply rinse and blot the stain. Do not scrub or wipe the place as the oil in the ink will spread and leave a permanent mark. If the stain is old then soak the stain in rubbing alcohol for 10 to 15 minutes then rub. After the rubbing, wash the cloth with detergent water.
  

• Nail polish remover: This can be also a very good ink stain remover as nail polish is also oil based like gel pen ink. But you have to test in any corner of the fabric before directly applying it on the cloth. As it might be the reason to change the fabric quality.
  

1. Dawn Dish Soap: This soap is especially for removing oil crease, so it works wonderfully on ballpoint ink stain and without spoiling the fabric without harming the hand.

Get rid of felt pen ink stains:

Felt pen ink is also oil-based, so you have to use the same process as ball pen ink stain like alcohol rubbing, using nail polish remover, or dawn dish soap. Don’t use water on the stain before using alcohol, nail polish remover, or dish soap. 

Get rid of water-based ink stains:

 Water-based ink stain is easy to remove just need to follow some simple steps as following:

1. Always use cold water as hot water makes the ink stain set faster which will be difficult to remove after that.
2. Laundry detergent will be effective and use spot stain treatment.
3. Allow the detergent to soak the stain for some time. You have to remember that you are transferring the ink from the cloth to the paper or towel.
4. Do not scrub the stain this will cause the spread of the ink all over the clothes.
5. Before putting the cloth in the dryer or in sunlight first ensure the spots have gone otherwise repeat the same process before the ink stains will get dry.

Some of the tips to get rid of the ink stain:

1. Act quickly: If you just get the Rust Stain then use immediately petroleum jelly on the stain. This will prevent the spread of the ink to any other cloth surfaces.
2. If you are unsure about the ink type: If you are unsure about the ink type then use both a small amount of water and rubbing alcohol then you can understand very easily which solution will work better.
3. Avoid vinegar: Try to avoid vinegar when the stain will be oil-based. Laundry detergent or dish soap works better than acid. You can prevent your cloth from discoloration.

What you will do if the ink stain gets dry:

Try to soak the stain in rubbing alcohol for 15-20 minutes then use the blotting method. Sometimes this will not work and you will not get a good result but the stain can fade.

Delicate cloth: above all the steps can be applied on cotton fabrics but for delicate fabrics like wool, silk prepares a solution of glycerine and detergent and uses the solution on the stain.

Apart from fabric ink stains can be there on the wooden surface as well which is also very difficult to get rid of. Below you will get some simple ways to remove ink stains.

Get rid of ink stains from the wooden surface:

• Using Dishwashing solution: use dishwashing solution directly on the stain then wipe the foam with a cloth.

• Using baking soda: Spread the paste made with baking soda and some water then applies to the stain. Keep it for some time then wipe with a cloth.
• Using white spirit:  Clean the stain by using some white spirit.

Get rid of ink stain from carpet:

1. Prepare a paste by mixing cornstarch and milk.
2. Apply the paste directly to the stain.
3. Keep it for 30 minutes to dry.
4. Then vacuumed the dried paste from the carpet.
5. Repeat the process if the stain remains.

Remove stain from wall:

1. Dip the eraser pad in the water.
2. Remove the marker stain by using circular motions slowly. Need to use a light press so that wall paint will not affect.
